Can i run a discovery tdi on veggie oil with no hard work involved and with no problems?

My last neighbor in Germany worked for Bosch. Head of engineering in fuel injection. Many a beer was downed discussing plant oils in diesel cars. As he explained the modern CDI/TDI diesel cars use extremely high pressure and extremely small injector holes to achieve optimal fuel/air mixing (atomization).

He was explaining that plant oils are too thick and will plug up the fuel injectors causing exspensive repairs.

Further never ever use bio-diesels unless your vehicle is designed to run them. These fuels use additives to thin the plant-oils. These additives are very aggressive to seals and gaskets that are not specifically designed to be used in bio-diesel systems. Funny part is most low end engines will run bio-diesel from the factory and exspensive vehicles require a retro fit.

Veggie oil is the reason that some many old (loud) diesels are being sought after and prices are climbing faster then a rocket. They will run most anything due to the simplicity of their systems. Can i run a discovery tdi on veggie oil with no hard work involved and with no problems?
Yes you can run it on veggie oil. Let us know how it turns outCan i run a discovery tdi on veggie oil with no hard work involved and with no problems?
Maybe - but by rights I think you still need to pay some sort of fuel duty!!!
?????????????????
Yep, i think so, if it works tell me because i have another Discovery.
Without some sort of fuel/injector heater then you CANNOT simply pour vegetable oil into your car and expect it to run OK. You MUST thin the veg oil with Diesel. The ratio of Veg oil to Diesel depends of the type of fuel pump the engine has.

If the engine has a Lucas CAV type of fuel pump then you can only run about 10% veg oil to 90% Diesel. This is because Lucas pumps use fuel to lubricate them. If the fuel is too viscous (thick) then your fuel pump WILL seize.

If the engine has a Bosch fuel pump then you can get away with higher ratios of veg oil. My car has a Bosch fuel pump and I mix 3 litres of Veg Oil for every 9 litres of diesel. My car (Rover 25 2.0 turbo diesel) has done about 70,000 miles like this.

If you do not want to install the necessary fuel heater then I would advise you to BE CAUTIOUS about the veg oil ratio - especially in cold weather. Replacing the fuel pump can be VERY expensive.

Even if you only run a 10% blend then you WILL save money and it IS better for the environment.

My understanding about tax is that yes you are supposed to register yourself as a ';fuel producer'; and pay tax. However, I am not a tax expert.

There are plenty of web sites with information on this.

Hope this helps.

Update: I've just done a little research and the tax rules changed in the UK in 2007. Now you only have to declare and pay tax if you ';produce'; (and simply pouring vegetable oils into your car counts as producing fuel) more than 2,500 litres per year. Effectively this means you have no tax to pay if you run a blend of veg oil %26amp; dielsel :-)
Short answer no, the viscosity is to high. The injectors on a TDI are to small, often veg oil will eat the seals and gaskets on the fuel system. More importantly the TDi engine does not take well to veg oil as there is a major issue with the electronic timing.

Ja.
yep just fill her up and away you go, we are all doing it what took you so long to cotton on ?
lots of people are running on a 50% mix of diesel and veg oil try a discovery forum and let us know. the legislation was changed on this in july so its ok for personal use. thinking of trying this myself
