Why didnt we save our selves from all of these oil problems years ago? why is it such a prob. now but not then

i mean now everyone wants to get off forign oil. so what changed between now and years ago? we were still getting it imported. had even worse fuel economy (which isnt to say todays is any better) i mean what has changd now to make everyone want this? were they all just not around 10 or 20 years ago when we could've prevented this problem? i know specualators are part of it. but to be honest eveyone in this oil game is at fault china and india are not so much because its their right to have a developed civilization but the oil companis, the specfulatoer and anyone else who is involved are all to blame for higher prices. i would've thought that we dealt with oil companies like a century ago but i guess that congress was just as corrupt as our present day one. so anyway why didnt we fix this, and now how are we going to? Why didnt we save our selves from all of these oil problems years ago? why is it such a prob. now but not then
I doubt anything will be done. I can remember the panic caused when the Iranians overthrew Mohammad Rez膩 Sh膩h Pahlavi (the Shah of Iran) who headed U.S backed regime, then attacked the American embassy in Tehran and took the staff as hostages. For the first time in American history gasoline went over a dollar a gallon. That was back in 1979, not only did the price practically double overnight people had to wait in long lines to get it.

Whether the shortage really existed or whether it was contrived by the oil companies there really was a panic. Well guess what things settled down, prices dropped and gasoline became available in mass quantities again. The incident was quickly forgotten. Since then we haven't built a single refinery in fact thanks to Jimmy Carter off shore oil drilling and exploration was banned.

And by the way it wasn't the first time that happened either, in 1973 there was the Arab Oil Embargo where Arab nations stopped selling oil to the West to punish them for backing Israel in the 1967 war. There was a genuine panic, supply problems and long gas lines then too. Suddenly all those import cars Americans refused to buy became popular and American auto makers started producing junk like the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto.

I'm beginning to think there are those in our government who like high energy costs because eventually people will be forced out of their cars and have to use public transportation. Soon we'll all be living in dense urban population centers like people did in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before mass produced autos and cheap gasoline hit the market. In short the population will be easier to monitor and control. Why didnt we save our selves from all of these oil problems years ago? why is it such a prob. now but not then
Carter had an alternative energy plan.
because terrorists who have the oil are pissed because we're kicking thier *** so they try to drive us down as much as possible we need to blow them into next year
OY Vey! ';From the mouths of babes';.....such ignorance!!!

You can look it up %26gt; Jimmy Carter had actually implemented a real energy Policy in which the stated goal was to have us generating up to 20% of our electrical use from renewables, solar %26amp; wind, and to import less oil from OPEC by 2002 as a matter of national security!! BUT, your minor Diety Reagan Slimed his way into office and the first thing he did was PULL the Solar Panels off the roof of the WH. And he dismantled the Tax Credits and funding for R%26amp;D for carbon based and renewable energy sources! All at the behest of his benefactors, Big OIL and big Utilities....s o here we are!!!
