What are the possible problems & solutions when the oil pressure needle flunctuates from high to low ?

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Changed oil %26amp; filter (10w-40) Pressure needle works fine until engine gets worm. What are the possible problems %26amp; solutions when the oil pressure needle flunctuates from high to low ?
Sending unit might be going out, my mom has a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and the oil pressure gauge is either buried in the high side or registering no pressure at all. I have checked the pressure with a testing unit and it was fine. Pulled a computer code that basically said the oil pressure wiring or sending unit is the culprit. I would either take it to the dealer or check it myself, because if it is correct that could indicate a clog in the system or an oil pump going out. What are the possible problems %26amp; solutions when the oil pressure needle flunctuates from high to low ?
What part of the world do you live in,ambient temp has a lot to do with the oil pressure not just engine temp,it's normal for oil pressure to drop when the engine gets hot because the oil thins out,so long as it doesn't drop to zero you are OK,
Oil pressure gauge has no relation to your power steering or anything to do with your drive belt(s). Your oil pump may be failing or you have a leak, maybe a head gasket or other seal/gasket. Or the oil pressure sender could be going bad.
If the oil pressure needle flucuates, it could be a sign of low oil levels in the oil pan.....if the flucation happens mostly during acceleration, decceleration or cornering....then I would say to check your dipstick often.

There is also a worst case scenario....if you recently had your heads serviced...perhaps the head gaskets were put on backwards....blocking some oil return galleys.

If this is the case, then the oil may be getting pumped into the valve cover and lifter galley area....and it may take a bit for it to return to the crank case....hence the psi fluctuation.

Just a thought....

Oh...one last thing....check the connection on your oil psi sender if it is dirty or loose...it could also cause a faux fluctuation.....contact/no contact etc....
Since you didn't specify 4.0 or 4.7 liter engine....I'm gonna take a stab at it and say it's the oil pressure sending unit.

On the 4.0 straight six, they were known for having problems.

I'd check there first....
Some oil pressure drop is to be expected as oil heats up it thins out causing it to produce less back pressure against the pump. Now if the oil pressure drops radically to 10 psi or less I would suspect your main bearings, which is not a cheap fix.
