Do oil additives help or do they cause more problems?

I have read a few things regarding additives, and it seems most experts do not place any value on additives, and actually sometimes can cause problems.


Better ideas are to use better quality oil and filter.


Change oil at 4000 miles rather than 5000.


If the car has higher miles, have the oil pan cleaned by being dipped in solvent, this removes sludge.


Make sure PCV valve and valve cover breather hoses are replaced if needed.

If you do regular oil and filter changes and use quality products when doing so, you will not need any additives. They make so many promises that go unfulfilled.Do oil additives help or do they cause more problems?
some of it works pretty good. ive used bg oil additive and cd2, they seem to work pretty good.but the kind of oil i use already have the additive in it. i use pennzoil high milage oil, it has z7 in it.
all the additives ive used have given me good to significant results...as in lucas oil additive it gave me better compression idled lower and gas me a boost in lost hp over the years...it all depends what you use..they are thicked because they fix the seals on the gaskets and make them last longer..they people who say they are thicker really dont know what they are talking about ive used 20w40 oil in my mustang and the dang thing started up everytime it doesnt matter the thickness i could add even thicker and get the same thing it doesnt matter...the additives are there to clean out your motor and to add to the seals and keep it somewhat clean as it gets dirty as a temp relieft as it gets dirtier...
their good some times..... the oil additives that are like honey arent to good, they thicken the oil and when oil gets thick it increases pressure, and an increase in pressure in your lubrication system usually mean blown seals (most of time front/rear main seal)
