I need Immediate help. Problems with a1998 Honda CR125? Also what type of oil to use after clutch repair?

I recently bought two 1998 Honda CR125's that need a little work on them.


The first one needed clutch work. I replaced the plates and I was wondering what type of oil to put back in there. I am not worried about the brand just what type, weight etc.


On the other bike the kickstart is locked up, it doesnt go down. I tried push starting it but the wheel just locked up. I took the clutch cover off and and started taking the clutch out to see if I could see what was wrong inside there. After I got the plates out I noticed that the kickstart moved freely. I decided to put it back together see if it still turned freely and it did. What would be the problem to cause this? After I kick it a few times do you think the problem will comeback?I need Immediate help. Problems with a1998 Honda CR125? Also what type of oil to use after clutch repair?
Interesting,,,about the locked-up kickstarter.





Those engines have Primary Kick drive.





Meaning,,you can start them in any gear by simply pulling clutch in.





The Kickstarter drives the Clutch Basket/Primary Gear Assy Directly,,,,and is always engaged---all kickstart gears always turn with engine rotation/Clutch Wheel rotation.





Removing the clutch plates from such a set-up only disengages TRANSMISSION mainshaft








If Engine is frozen,,Clutch Wheel and All Kickstart gears are ';permanently engaged'; to engine and will NOT Turn either.





Got that part?


If these X's are Gears,,it's set up like this


XXXX,,,4 Gears permanently engaged


*Kick Drive Gear


*Kick Idler Gear


*Kick DRIVEN gear(small cog fastened to Back of Clutch gear)


*Engine Primary Pinion gear








Connection of the entire Permanently Engaged Primary Drive AND Kickstart Drive train,,,,


%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;TO the Transmission is Thru the interlaced Clutch Plates which engage the Clutch INNER HUB splined to Trans Main Shaft.





If Removing the Plates allowed the Locked-Up Kickstarter to Turn(Which would also necessarily be Turning ENGINE),,,





then something in the Trans was Locked up.





Removing the Plates DISENGAGES the Trans from the Primary Drive,,,,same as pulling in clutch lever does.





Makes ZERO difference if plates were stuck together or not.


The effect of that would be merely the exact same as kicking the starter with trans In Gear and Not pulling in clutch lever---


The bike would go forward AND engine would turn also.





Makes no sense that removing clutch plates,,then replacing them would free-up a locked up kickstarter.





It's BUILT ';locked-up';...it's Made that way





Only thing the Plates do is engage connection of Primary Drive to Transmission.





Don't take my word for it,,,get a service manual or a parts diagram,,,and look for yourself how the kickstart drive train is constructed,,,,what drives what,,,and what all is engaged.





If you can remove Clutch Plates and Free-up a Locked Kickstart,,,,,all you've done is disconnect transmission.


The assumption therefore is that something in Trans was in a bind.





Hondas have a single cam shift drum,,therefore you cannot have simultaneous engagement of 2 gearsets,,,


ie,,Can't be ';In'; 2nd and 3rd at same time to cause a lock-up.


Only One Gearset is engageable at any time.





Only physical damage to gear locating clips/wshrs,,or really bad shift fork will allow such a conflict lock-up.





Bearing failure can lock one up,,or pieces of metal between gear teeth can,,a few other things.





I'd be very suspicious of a Trans problem,,,according to the scenario you describe.





If engine itself is locked,,,it wont kick whether clutch plates are in or out or not.


It's permanently hard-geared from kick-to-crankshaft.





Kick engagement is strictly via the starter pawl





If it Wont kick with Clutch ENGAGED,


it could be


a)Engine


b)Transmission





If it DOES kick with Clutch DIS-Engaged(Or removed)


a)Engine IS Turning


b)Trans is SUSPECT to be the lock-up





One Odd Possibility is this.


IF a piece of foreign matter was to lodge between Any of the teeth ANYWHERE on any of the Primary Drive train,,,that Could lock up the ';Kickstarter';.





Then,,,';working on the thing'; Could Possibly allow the debris the fall out,,,removing the Jam from the primary drive.





Whatever the actual situation,,,


It's a VERY simple system.


It doesn't Lock-Up, then Unlock and work fine for No Reason.





Double Check it,,,most everything involved are fairly expensive parts.


Takes a significant fault ';somewhere'; to lock up a kickstarter on a Primary Kick system.

Sounds like sticking clutch plates: they can bind together under some circumstances. If it's working now, that's great. Just use ordinary 4-stroke motorcycle oil for the gearbox. You can get special 2-stroke gearbox oil, but it's not necessary. Run the bike for an hour or two, then change it again to remove contaminants.





Remember, your 2-stroke gearbox and clutch are just like those on a 4-stroke bike, so the same oil is used.
The piston and rings are probably seized to the cylinder.


Remove the exhaust pipe and look in the exhaust port to see it there is any damage - It's less of a mess than pulling off the head and spilling the coolant.
Replace with an 80 to 90 weight gear oil, as far as the kick start, may have been that the engine having not been run in a while was in a slightly seized point.Before starting, squirt some wd40 down the sparkplug hole and spin over engine without starting.( to lubricate the rings) problem should not return unless something wrong with the kick pedal itself.
