Engine problems oil change?

i have a 2006 chevy cobalt and let my son drive it for a while the car has 58000 miles on it. and the problem is the oil has never been changed i just changed it and drove it for a while today and it is knocking pretty bad it has new oil and a new filter what could be the problemEngine problems oil change?
Too late on the maintenance and the engine is worn. Is it a hard loud metallic rap (connecting rod) low thump (main bearings) or tap tap (lifter or stuck valve) Get a mechanic to give a listen. Tap tap isn't too bad, all else bad news.Engine problems oil change?
If it is ';knocking '; that is piston rod bearings and your eng is trashed, and will need rebuild.

If it is just ';ticking'; then that is the valve lifters
You didn't change the oil once in 58,000 miles? Or it didn't get changed just while your son was driving it? Either way, low or severely dirty oil can cause a world of hurt inside an engine. Wrist pins (connecting rod bearings), main bearings, etc. could have seen greatly accelerated wear, and if so, it's rebuild time. Sorry.

One or even two missed oil changes in a row might not be TOO bad, provided the oil was kept full, but a ton of miles with no oil change is a sure pointer to a major issue with the engine....
You are just getting what you deserve for not maintaining you car like you should.
Three year old Chevy wants to go see Mr Goddwrench and get all its sludge flushed out and new connecting rod bearings if the crankshaft isn't scored. I think the sludge that was sitting like a spider in the corner has migrated into a small oil passage and won't let anything else get through. There is tragedy in that engine. The hero is dying of oil starvation. Now it will really use less gas than a Corolla- until you rebuild it.
