Yamaha v-star 650 oil check sight glass problems?

I own a 2007 vstar 650 silverado. I'm having trouble reading the oil level, I don't see any line showing the oil line, its only black, and this is with the bike upright. Hasn't been ridden much and is still in the break in period. How noticeable is the difference where the oil line should be. Also exactly were are the fill lines next to the glass? Thanks for any info!!!Yamaha v-star 650 oil check sight glass problems?
By now you've noticed it's not possible to sit on the bike and see the sightglass at the same time...get yourself an inspection mirror from Harbor Freight or anywhere that has tools. Get one with a handle that telescopes out. This way you can sit on the bike and use the mirror to see the sightglass. This will allow you to move the bike slightly off center and find the oil level. If it's covering the sightglass completely, it's too full. Black oil indicates a change badly needed and perhaps a filter that's not working properly. If it's still in breakin, then it's still under warranty. Get with your dealer...Yamaha v-star 650 oil check sight glass problems?
Get yourself a flashlight, too!

I find that, even outside, it is difficult to see the oil level without just the right lighting.

With a flashlight, you should be able to see the gauge through the oil.

From what I understand, since you're still in the break-in period, your oil should be clean, but may contain small metal shavings/filings as the parts wear into each other. This is the reason for changing the oil at the end of the break-in period.
If your sight glass is ';black';, you have a problem. Check you owners manual to be sure you're checking in the right place. If the bike is new and still in it's break-in period, the oil should not be black. Keep in mind that Yamaha oil, when new, is very clear.
When checking your oil, it is better to have a second person on the motorcycle and you looking at the sight glass. Have them move it a little from side to side to see the level. It may be over full, but checking this way will help.
oil level is to the centre of sight, check with bike up right, if it's black you have too much oil and it needs to be changed anyway.
You might change the oil a little more often.
